article review for CALL

salam dr. izaham

http://www.eltrec.ukm.my/ijellt/pdf/WanZumusni.pdf

A. Proper Citation of the Article

For this particular article, I have chose and article that I get from the Internet. The title of this article is “Brushing Lecturers’ Fear in Integrating Computer Assisted Language Learning”. This article is written by Wan Zumusni Bte Wan Mustapha from Universiti Teknologi MARA together with Supyan Hussin and Norizan Abdul Razak from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. This article is posted in the electronic journal by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

B. Summary of the Article

This article is based on the research done by these three lecturers. This study is done in order to get the lecturers’ feedback and also to get their point of view of this issue. CALL or computer assisted language learning is very popular in today’s world especially in higher learning institution. It is widely in classroom used in order to help lecturers and teachers in the teaching process. CALL is the implementation of technologies such as computer, software and the internet as a teaching medium. In this particular study the researchers find out about lecturers’ fear in using CALL in their classroom. There are lecturers that are afraid to use CALL in their classroom and it is caused by several reasons. It will be explained in the findings later on. For this study, the researchers have used the qualitative approach in order to get the data for the findings. They interviewed lecturers that teach academic writing by using the online onsite method. Using the open ended questionnaire, the researchers interviewed several lecturers of a private learning institution. The reason they did it here is because here they have all the facilities for CALL to take place. These are the facilities such as computer laboratories and internet connection. In the findings part, the researchers are able to find out that some lecturers are afraid in using CALL in their classroom because of few reasons. The first one is that the lecturer does not believe in the effectiveness of CALL in the classroom. It is because she views learning via computer is more suitable for distance learning and not for classroom usage. The second reason is that the lecturers are not given proper training to teach by using CALL. This is because lectures are only exposed to basic programs and it is not suitable to be used on the classroom. The third reason is that they are afraid that they will face technical difficulties and it will interrupt the learning process.

C. Reaction

This article really interests me as it is from the lecturers’ perspective. It is very useful for me if one day I decide to work in the education field. This is because this article provides me with a lot of knowledge that I need in order to prepare myself as a lecturer that can use CALL in my classroom. I believe that this research is very well conducted by the researchers. The reason I say so is because this issue is very important and it is important for us to pay serious attention to this matter. In the near future, CALL might change the education approach that we use today. This research can also play a big impact on the teaching and learning of ESL in Malaysia. This is because the article can help the teachers to realize about the importance of CALL. It will also give them to opportunity to become a better CALL user in the classroom. By reading this article they could try to solve the difficulties by going for extra training and getting extra knowledge.
